Institute to Focus on Major Trends and Discontinuities Affecting Businesses and Societies and to Include a Center for Macroeconomics

The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), one of the world's leading management consulting firms, today announced the establishment of the Bruce Henderson Institute, which will be dedicated to pioneering new ideas and approaches to solving business challenges. BCG is launching the institute to honor and celebrate Bruce Henderson, the firm’s founder, on the hundredth anniversary of his birth.

The Bruce Henderson Institute will develop and translate innovative ideas from within and beyond business to help influence how organizations think about strategy and execution. With a global focus, the institute will examine the implications of the major trends and discontinuities affecting businesses and societies.

“Bruce was truly a leading pioneer in business strategy and a key figure in the development of today’s management consulting industry,” said Richard Lesser, BCG’s president and chief executive officer. “Many of his original ideas and concepts for understanding business opportunities and challenges continue to be used by consultants and business leaders around the world. In a period of immense challenges for the global economy, the establishment of the Bruce Henderson Institute exemplifies BCG’s commitment to stay on the cuttingedge of ideas and to translate those ideas into meaningful business impact.”

Based in BCG’s New York office, senior partner Martin Reeves will lead the institute globally and in North America. Arindam Bhattacharya, a senior partner in BCG’s New Delhi office, will lead the institute in Asia and emerging markets. Judith Wallenstein, a partner in BCG’s Berlin office, will lead the institute’s European efforts.

“Bruce Henderson challenged us always to raise the bar higher,” said Reeves. “We hope that by creating a center of excellence for developing new ideasfor business, we can honor and sustain Bruce’s original mission when founding BCG: to always bring new insight and value to our clients.”

"As the emerging economic engine for the world, Asia provides a unique context of fast growing middle class consumers, many businesses which are family owned, and institutional and governance models that are under development. These factors provide a crucible for developing unique management ideas and business models that will not just shape Asian companies but competitive strategies around the world. The institute is the platform to identify and develop these ideas and observe them in practice at our clients around the world.” said Arindam Bhattacharya, Managing Director BCG India and Head of Bruce Henderson Institute in Asia.

BCG will establish the Center for Macroeconomics as part of the institute, to explore the impact of global macroeconomic developments on business, growth, and innovation. The center will be led by Philipp Carlsson-Szlezak, an accomplished economist from BCG’s Public Sector practice in Germany. It will feature insights from BCG’s internal network of economists as well as an external board of leading economists, led by Professor Coen Teulings of the University of Cambridge.
