Developing acute hospital in Ireland at €350m to ease pressure on Cork University Hospital

Monday, March 16, 2015

A NEW greenfield acute hospital aimed at easing pressure on Cork University Hospital will cost almost €350m to develop.

The revelation came as Health Minister Leo Varadkar has been urged by a fellow Government minister to consider a docklands site for the ambitious project.

European Affairs Minister Dara Murphy said such a docklands site would offer significant transport and logistical benefits.

No major funding has yet been allocated for the venture by the Health Service Executive.

Mercy University Hospital was considering a new building following its formal alliance with the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital eight years ago.

Both hospitals operate from city premises that date back to the 19th century.

Mr Varadkar is being asked to sanction a new hospital for Cork, with six possible sites already being earmarked.
