DSS, Inc. and FDB Collaborate to Enhance Patient Care and Outcomes

Wednesday, May 18, 2016

Document Storage Systems, Inc. (DSS), the leading provider of health information technology (HIT) solutions for federal, private and public healthcare organizations, today announced a collaboration with FDB (First Databank), the leading provider of clinical drug knowledge that helps improve medication-related decisions and patient outcomes. DSS will incorporate FDB’s MedsTracker® MedRec and e-Prescribing solutions within its open source EHR system, vxVistA, to enhance patient care transitions and help healthcare organizations achieve Meaningful Use compliance.

Difficulty tracking and communicating medications accurately and efficiently during the patient hand-off process inhibits care delivery and can result in adverse drug events. Workflow complexities for medication orders and reconciliation also contribute to errors and/or complications. With FDB’s MedsTracker MedRec and eRx, patients can seamlessly transition through the care delivery process—from admission to discharge—and care teams can easily and accurately electronically prescribe the medications needed during all of these phases.

“With informed estimates now placing adverse drug events as the third leading cause of death in the US, medication decision support is a necessity these days,” said Chuck Tuchinda, MD, MBA, president at FDB. “We are pleased to be working with DSS, combining our clinical medication knowledge with their expertise in VistA, vxVistA and other niche market environments—like behavioral health—to truly get to the root of a key component to enhancing patient outcomes.”

By integrating directly into DSS’ commercial vxVistA platform, FDB’s MedsTracker medication reconciliation and electronic prescribing solutions will allow hospitals and health systems to:

    Optimize the patient admission, transfer and discharge process;
    Complete safety checks and audit each step in the care process;
    Deliver a medically accurate and easily understandable reconciled list of home and inpatient medications;
    Enable electronic prescribing of controlled substances;
    Access critical information related to medication cost, coverage status, dosage and delivery; and
    Free up time for the clinical care team to spend at the patient bedside.

“Medication decision support is a critical step in reducing errors and facilitating better outcomes for patients, and our partnership with FDB will improve those workflow processes for our customers,” said Mark Byers, CEO and president at DSS. “FDB’s proven technology is a great expansion to our portfolio, enabling smooth patient care delivery and care transitions, as well as seamless operational workflows in medication order prescribing and processing.”
