Tampa General Hospital Introduces Innovative Ultrasound Therapy for Treating Severe Hypertension

Friday, March 15, 2024

The Tampa General Hospital's Heart & Vascular Institute has recently pioneered the use of an innovative technology aimed at controlling hypertension or uncontrolled high blood pressure. Developed by Recor Medical, the Paradise Ultrasound Renal Denervation (RDN) System employs ultrasound energy to ablate the renal nerves, thus reducing blood pressure levels. This minimally invasive procedure can typically be conducted on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home on the same day. The Medical Director & Cardiology Section Chief at TGH, in conjunction with the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, has emphasized that patients with life-threatening or resistant hypertension, unresponsive to conventional treatments, are eligible for this FDA-approved procedure.

By delivering a 360-degree ring of energy using ultrasound, the system targets approximately 80 percent of the sympathetic nerves around the renal arteries, aiming to alleviate hypertension. To protect the arterial wall during the procedure, a hydro-cooling balloon is utilized. Hypertension affects nearly half of all adults, with only a quarter of those affected managing to control their condition.

This ailment poses significant health risks, contributing to a large number of deaths annually and incurring substantial economic costs for the United States. Thus, the introduction of this advanced technology holds promise for improving hypertension management, potentially reducing related mortality rates and healthcare expenditures.
