Viennese hospitals to improve cancer treatment with Elekta equipment and software

Monday, July 18, 2016

The Vienna Hospital Association (Wiener Krankenanstaltenverbund) has chosen to treat its cancer patients with advanced solutions from Elekta’s (EKTA-B.ST) radiation therapy and software portfolio. The deal will include four Versa HD and two Elekta Infinity linear accelerators, brachytherapy afterloaders, MOSAIQ oncology information system and Monaco treatment planning system, as well as long-term service contracts.

The equipment and software will be installed at two new radiation oncology departments situated in Vienna: Hietzing Hospital (KHR) and Sozialmedizinisches Zentrum Ost - Donauspital (SZO) in a long-term public-private partnership contract. All equipment and software will be delivered over the next 24 months.

Ian Alexander, Chief Commercial Officer at Elekta, says that this significant order underpins Elekta’s leading market position in Austria on a long-term basis. ”Almost 40,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in Austria each year and it’s the second most common cause of death in the country. Studies have proven that radiation therapy is an effective treatment for cancer, even if it cannot save every patient. We are grateful to be able to make an impact on these statistics and the patients at the Vienna Hospital Association by improving or saving lives.”

The Vienna Hospital Association, which includes all hospitals and geriatric centers in the City of Vienna, is one of the largest hospital operators in Europe. The Association will purchase the Elekta equipment and software through VAMED, a leading international company in the field of planning, building, and managing complex public health care facilities. Elekta will act as a subcontractor to VAMED.

The order was signed and booked during the first quarter of Elekta’s fiscal year 2016/17. The first shipment of equipment is scheduled for May 2017.
