Manila hospital group seeks UAE expansion

Monday, October 10, 2016

The Manila-based Medical City hospital group is boosting its presence in the UAE, to promote medical tourism to the Philippines.

The tertiary care hospital has five hospitals and 40 clinics in the Philippines, a 200-bed hospital in Guam and a clinic in Dubai.

It opened a Dh10 million polyclinic in Dubai last October. It will be followed by more clinics in the city and the Northern Emirates next year, mostly through acquisitions, said Dr Rebecca Desiderio, the chief executive of Sama TMC Medical Services, a joint venture of the Kuwait-based Sama Medical Group and PSI Healthcare Development Services Corporation in the Philippines.

She was speaking on the sidelines of the two-day International Medical Travel Exhibition and Conference that started in Dubai on Sunday.

"It was always our business model to open more satellite clinics to complement the clinic in Dubai," she said. "We are trying to strengthen our current specialities."

About 90 per cent of patients at its Dubai clinic are Filipinos, most of whom seek obstetric care, and orthopaedic and oncology treatments.

The Philippines, a new entrant in the medical tourism sector, has five hospitals, including Asian Hospital and Medical Centre, St Luke’s Medical Centre Global City and the Medical City in Pasig City, that are accredited by Joint Commission International.
