Quebec Health Minister Gaetan Barrette promised the Lachine Hospital would be expanded with work beginning in 2018.
Barrette was at the hospital for the inauguration of its new dialysis unit and took the opportunity to make the announcement which was heartily applauded by staff attending the event.
"Many people thought at some point the hospital might close. And I'm very pleased today to announce that not only will it not close, it will remain open," said Barrette
"There were talks in the past to renovate and build a new part of the facility and that will be the case and I can guarantee you that is an official position on my part."
Barrette said they are in the process of finalizing the plans for the new building with construction expected to get underway in two years. Barrette said the estimated cost for the expansion and renovations is $70 million to $80 million that have been set aside in the government's budget.
