Wellington med-tech company Matakina Technology expands into India

Monday, April 20, 2015

A Wellington med-tech company has expanded its sales into India.

Matakina Technology sold its breast density software Volpara Solutions in a $100,000 deal with Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh.

The software, which provides a volumetric measure of breast density from both digital mammography and high resolution images, has enabled radiologists to give more than four million women accurate information regarding their breast health.

The sale into India was part of a rapid global expansion for the business, which has seen revenues doubling year on year.

Founded in 2009 by a group of physicists, cancer and medical imaging specialists, it now has operations in 31 countries.

Deals were recently completed in Belgium, Canada, Turkey, Korea, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Volpara Solutions chief executive Ralph Highnam said the first sale into a major global economy, with a massive population, was important for the continued growth of the business.

Breast screening in India was starting and the company would be at the heart of the programme as it increased, he said.

India's National Cancer Registry Programme reports a rising incidence of breast cancer in younger patients. PGIMER will use the software to better understand why India's cancer risk is rising, and the differences in cancer risk between their different ethnic populations.

Highnam believed the sale in India would also open up possibilities across Asia, where screening was already established.

In January, Matakina Technology signed a multimillion-dollar distribution deal with GE Healthcare, the biggest medical device distributor in the world.

Volpara Solutions is a finalist in this years Hi-Tech Awards, which will take place on May 15.

Matakina Technology was a Wellington Gold Award supreme winner in 2014.
